Support Rain-Affected Communities in Recife May 2022

The state of Pernambuco and 4 other states in the northeastern region of Brazil have been devastated by heavy rains since the beginning of this week. Some municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of Recife, as well as some municipalities of the Zona da Mata were extremely affected, mainly the populations living in poverty, victims of the environmental racism that divides the territory leaving the most dangerous areas for black and non-white populations. The peripheral populations are the ones who lost their homes and the little they could acquire with poorly paid jobs, and the ones who today die mainly in landslides or are swept away by the water. So far, 128 deaths,  and 9,302 unsheltered people have been registered.

In the same way, many women’s collectives once again unite in support of their communities, sharing their pots, giving shelter and reproducing life in a city that constantly tries to condemn them to death.

The rains will come every year to this and many other Brazilian cities, increasing in intensity due to elements such as climate change. Evidently, it is not nature that is to blame for this phenomenon, but rather the management of resources and their unequal distribution. The lack of public policies for housing and disaster prevention, since it is inefficient to react to emergencies without prevention mechanisms, has caused thousands of families in Recife to lose everything, from their homes and belongings to the lives of family and friends.

The women from the Revista Amazonas collective and the Revelar.si collective from the community of Coque, organized this international campaign to raise funds for community centers led by women’s rights defenders and women’s collectives organized in their communities in Recife. These community centers have specific information about the needs of the families that benefit from their work, their social action and the struggle for the right to land and housing. Their contribution will help to benefit in a more specific way the diversity of needs that each community participating in this action faces. 

Throughout the process of this campaign we will be posting pictures of the benefited communities and the arrival of this humanitarian aid to different places affected by the rains in Recife.

O estado de Pernambuco e outros 4 estados da região nordeste do Brasil foram devastados por fortes chuvas desde o início desta da ultima semana de Maio. Alguns municípios da Região Metropolitana de Recife, assim como alguns municípios da Zona da Mata foram extremamente afetados, principalmente as populações que vivem na pobreza, vítimas do racismo ambiental que divide o território deixando as áreas mais perigosas para as populações negras e não-brancas. Quem perdeu suas casas e o pouco que podia adquirir com empregos mal remunerados são as populações periféricas e as que hoje morrem principalmente em deslizamentos de terra ou são arrastadas pelas águas. Até agora, foram registradas 128 mortes e 9,392 pessoas desabrigadas.

Da mesma forma, muitas coletivas de mulheres se unem mais uma vez em apoio a suas comunidades, compartilhando suas panelas, dando abrigo e reproduzindo a vida em uma cidade que constantemente tenta condená-las à morte.

As chuvas virão a cada ano para esta e muitas outras cidades brasileiras, aumentando de intensidade devido a fatores como a mudança climática. Evidentemente, não é a natureza a responsável por este fenômeno, mas sim a gestão dos recursos e sua distribuição desigual. A falta de políticas públicas de moradia e prevenção de desastres, por ser ineficiente reagir a emergências sem mecanismos de prevenção, fez com que milhares de famílias no Recife perdessem tudo, desde suas casas e pertences até a vida de familiares, amigas e amigos.

O coletivo de mulheres da Revista Amazonas e o coletivo Revelar.si da comunidade de Coque, organizaram esta campanha internacional para arrecadar fundos para centros comunitários liderados por defensoras de direitos e coletivos de mulheres organizadas em suas comunidades no Recife. Estes centros comunitários possuem informações específicas sobre as necessidades das famílias que se beneficiam de seu trabalho, sua ação social e a luta pelo direito à terra e à moradia. Sua contribuição ajudará a beneficiar de forma mais específica a diversidade de necessidades que cada comunidade participante desta ação enfrenta. 

Ao longo do processo desta campanha estaremos colocando fotos das comunidades beneficiadas e da chegada desta ajuda humanitária a diferentes lugares afetados pelas chuvas em Recife.
