Nossa campanha:
Our campaign:Our collective house welcomes everyone who arrives on this QUILOMBO. It is the permanent home of our community leaders: Doné Oyassy (Rosa Maria Virgulino) and Tata Kejessy (Elvio Motta). The wooden house covered with asbestos tiles was built 25 years ago. In the present moment, our QUILOMBO headquarters suffers from structural problems, not guaranteeing safety to residents and the community. As a result of this condition, we started the construction of a new masonry house. At this moment, we need your help to continue with the works and guarantee the continuity of our community work, welcoming everyone with love and security. Who we are:Since 1995, the Traditional Community of Terreiro (we also call it with the yoruba word "Ylê" to make reference to the sacred land where the values and beliefs of this community is rooted) is located in a rural settlement area in the municipality of Araras, in the State of São Paulo. The settlement is the result of a process of struggle for the right to land. Our community is registered as OSCIP (Civil Society Organisation in the Public Interest), and we are a Point of Culture and Memory, recognized by the State of São Paulo. Our Ylê follows matriarchal principles of quilombo (making home and community with Afrocentric perspectives to protect, praise and pass on the culture of Black people), led by Doné Oyassy and Tata Kejessy.
Our actions:
We operate on several fronts, transmitting traditional African Matrix fundamentals in dialogue with the different forms of (re)construction and (re)signification of Afro-Brazilian references in the community. Such practices materialize our identity belonging.
We offer activities open to the public interacting with multiple languages, forms and expressions, including:
Vocabulary:Quilombo: the term became famous for determining the piece of land where enslaved Black people who ran away from their masters to create gathered in a community. The original name comes from Angola, in the historical moment of the Angolan resistance when warriors would camp in the forest under the leadership of their war ritual chiefs. From the strategical perspective of quilombo being the place against the establishment, quilombo is a history of adapting resistance to the context of oppression in which community, the use of land and spiritual healing can thrive. According to Beatriz Nascimento, quilombo is not just a place, it is my roots. I am a quilombo. This idea is in dialogue with the political importance of having our land and the radical awareness that we are connected with the community wherever we go.
